I joined Saket on 20/2/06.But I had known it since my childhood. While studying at Chandigarh. I used to commute daily from Kalka to Chandigarh by bus. I would look at the building and sometimes the children with indifference. I had very little sympathy for these special kids. I wish I had known that I would be disabled one day and would be working here myself. Probably I would have had more feelings for these people. But I am no Mother Teresa, so I ask for forgiveness from God. It is better to be late than never.

Saket came into being on the Republic Day in year 1957 in the then unified Punjab. Presently it’s being run by the Haryana Saket Council,Chandimandir.

His Excellency the Governor of Haryana is the President. The CM of Haryana is the Vice President and Chairman. The DGHS of Haryana is the Vice Chairman. All these are Ex Officio positions.

The aims and objectives of this institute are to educate, train and rehabilitate the physically challenged so that they become self independent and make their contribution to the society.

For this we have a High School in the campus where besides disabled children, normal children from the nearby areas come for studies.

There are about 72 handicapped children staying in the hostel. They get free boarding and lodging. Apart from this they are also trained in activities such as music, computer studies and vocational studies such as candle making and other skills like drawing and painting. They are also encouraged in sports such as cricket and Table Tennis. Thus they are made to forget their disabilities and enjoy life like normal children of their age. They are special members of our Saket family.

The armed forces wives’ welfare association (ANAWA) runs a play room six days of the week where the children play indoor games and read magazines to improve their general knowledge. The ANAWA is doing a selfless service to our ogranisation and we are grateful to them.

We have a workshop for making appliances used by the handicapped. Most of the employees are disabled.

Then there is a printing press, an ITI for tailoring trade in the campus.

Now we have a fully functional Orthopedic Hospital at Sector 1 in Panchkula with outdoor, indoor and operation theatre. The Physiotherapy unit is well staffed and well equipped with latest gadgets.

Presently the centre is headed by the Director General cum Honorary General Secretary Col. Dr. G.P. Taneja, who specializes in Hospital Administration. Col. Taneja joined us on 7/7/06 after his superannuation from the army. His last posting was as Senior Registrar of the Command Hospital at Chandimandir. We are very sure that with his vast experience he will further improve the Council.
We have Dr. J.S. Bhatia (MS Ortho)HCMS-I as our Director who has worked here for almost three years. The Council has seen tremendous improvement under his leadership.

Both these officers are great human beings besides being thorough professionals in their chosen fields. We hope that they continue here for a long time to come.

Last but not the least I must make a special mention of Mrs. Bhatia who has been doing a selfless job of looking after the welfare of the children. She is very popular with them. We salute you ma’am.
