BRIEF HISTORY OF SAKET

It is said that in ancient days, the Sages used to cure the physically handicapped with a magic touch. That miracle of yore may not be possible now. The Medical Science has taken place that ‘miracle’ which is being applied to remove the handicaps, and to enable the disabled persons to lead an independent, useful and honourable life. But for such treatment they would continue to be helpless being looked down upon as a burden on the Society.

The Social Welfare Organisations have begun to realize, that the handicapped persons have every right to be given the best treatment to life honourably. To enable them to lead a useful life many beneficial programmes have been worked out and put into practice. More are being drawn up.

“Saket” is the name of the Home for Orthopaedically Handicapped Children – the only one of its kind in the Northern India – at Chandimandir. The expression ‘Saket’ means ‘abode of gods’.

The idea of setting up the present Home emanated from Shrimati Indira Gandhi. The inspiration came from Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India. They both visited Saket at its inception.

Shrimati Pratibha Singh, daughter of Shri C.P.N. Singh, the then Governor of unified Punjab, who was engaged in the Social Welfare activities in the Punjab State, started the Home in the out-buildings of the Circuit House at Chandimandir with four children on the 26th January 1957, the Republic Day.

The number of inmates rose to twenty by July 1957 with a waiting list. The out-buildings could accommodate only 20 beds. The Punjab Government was then generous enough to place the entire buildings of the Circuit House for use by Saket at a nominal rent. On October 2, 1957, Saket shifted to the more spacious building with 26 inmates. Shri D.P. Karmakar, Union Health Minister performed the opening ceremony. Later a new ward was added. It was opened by Shrimati Durga Bai Deshmukh. We had then 35 children. The number of inmates rose gradually. The new building could accommodate only 50 children and by the end of year 1958 there were pressing demands for more admissions. The waiting list exceeded one hundred. At close of 1959 the Punjab Government and the Government of India, Ministry of Education, agreed to finance our programme to raise a new block for another fifty children. This was erected at a cost of more than 1, 63,000.00. In January 1963, we occupied the new Block in which classes for School, the Physio-Occupational Therapy Department, the Workshop of O.T. Department shifted. Fifty girl inmates also shifted into the new building. The administrative set-up was also housed in the same. The bed strength of Saket rose to one hundred in January 1963 and the admissions gradually rose up to that number.

Saket was thus functioning as a full-fledged 100-beded Home with Operation Theatre, X-Ray Department, Physio-Occupational Therapy Department and a School, at the foot of Shivalik hills in salubrious surroundings for treatment of orthopaedically handicapped children (both boys and girls) to give them a new hope to face vicissitudes of life boldly and to give them an honourable place in the Society. The Saket Council manages it. The Governor, Haryana, is the President. The Chief Minister, Haryana, is ex-officio Chairman.

As our workload increased, the complex at Chandimandir became inadequate. So a new and modern hospital was built at Panchkula. It started functioning in 1996. It is a modern hospital with the latest equipment. We have indoor and outdoor departments along with OT and a modern gymnasium for physiotherapy. About 250 operations of joint replacements have been done at this hospital. Thus we not only look after disabled children, we also take care of the elderly.

Raja is a ferociously independent person. He has seen many ups and downs in his short life including a recent failed love affair. But he always bounces back no matter how low he has gone. He hates to be called a disabled. He loves to play cricket. His team of our inmates beat the staff team of normal children in a friendly match. Presently he is trying to pass the Secondary examination through open schooling. Earlier he had dropped out of school after 5th standard. He won a gold medal in national Olympics for the handicapped where he represented our state in artificial limb making. He has beaten normal players in Table Tennis also.

We also have a coeducational High School, where apart from our inmates, children from nearby villages study.

We have a computer training center for our inmates. Our inmates are doing very well in studies as well as sports and other extracurricular activities.
We hope to improve further in coming days.
